The Liturgical Institute welcomes
application from all interested in the renewal of the Church's liturgy and
qualified for further study.The
application deadline is May 15 for admission to the summer session; July 15 is
the deadline for admission to the programs which begin in the fall.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and late applications

General Information About Liturgical Institute
Programs
Transfer of Credits:
Up to 12 quarter hours or 9
semester hours of the M.A. programs’ required courses may be transferred
from another institution after satisfactory evaluation of the course work by
faculty of the Institute. Up to one full year of S.T.L. credits from another
canonical faculty may be accepted at the discretion of the Ecclesiastical
Dean and the Director of the Institute. In the area of sacramental
specialization, all courses must be taken at the Liturgical
Institute.
Entrance Examinations:
Applicants to the M.A.
programs who have inadequate academic backgrounds in theology or religious
studies may be required to pass an entrance examination before admission.
Candidates are notified about this requirement by the Institute after
submission of application materials. A guided reading list will be provided
for entrance examinations.
Language Requirements:
For the M.A. (Liturgical
Studies) and S.T.L programs, liturgical Latin and a reading knowledge of one
modern language (French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Polish) is required.
Language requirements are met by having completed, with a grade of B or
better, an intermediate level course within two years previous to
application, or by successful completion of a language reading examination
at the Institute. Latin courses are offered on campus and modern languages
may be studied at nearby educational institutions. For the M.A. in Liturgy,
there are no foreign language requirements.
Application:
Candidates must complete the
official application form in its entirety. The application deadline is May

Interview:
A personal interview with the
applicant may be required by the Institute. For this purpose, overnight
lodging and meals are available at the University at no charge.
Housing:
On-campus housing, including
a single room with private bathroom, is available for single students.
Telephone service and high-speed internet access are available in each room.
A common area with television and full kitchen is also provided for
on-campus residents. The
Institute provides housing information for married students and those who desire
off-campus housing.
Board:
Full meal services are
available to on-campus students. Partial meal plans are available to
off-campus residents.
Tuition, Room and Board, and Fees:
For the S.T.L. program, tuition for
the full-time academic year is
$18,087.00. Academic year room and full board costs total $7,911.00. Fees
include a one-time $25.00 general fee, a $100.00 student activity fee, and a
$200.00 technology fee. Tuition for the 2009 Summer Session is $4,800.00. Room and full board costs
are $1386.00.
For the Master's Degree programs, tuition full year tuition is $14,400, with an
additional $7,911 for academic year room and board. Tuition for the 2009 Summer Session is $4,800.
Summer room and full board costs
total $1386.
Fees include a one-time $25.00 general fee, a $100.00 student activity fee,
and a $200.00 technology fee.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, the
cost for part-time tuition is $475.00 per credit hour.
Financial Aid:
Students in the Liturgical
Institute are eligible for all government and private student aid programs.
For the S.T.L., some financial aid is also available on a limited basis for
missionary dioceses. Opportunities for on-campus work may be available.
Health Insurance:
All students are required to
have health insurance. Students without health insurance may purchase annual
coverage through the University’s group plan. Summer students should provide
proof of insurance.
The Campus: The University
campus, located in Mundelein, Illinois, is forty miles northwest of downtown
Chicago. The fourteen major buildings which comprise the physical plant are
situated at the west end of the campus overlooking Saint Mary’s Lake. The
buildings are inspired by American Colonial architecture and include the centrally located
Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Administration Building, Feehan
Memorial Library, Theology Lecture Hall, Theology Residence, Center Office,
Conference
Center Hall
and Faculty Residence. The
University
of St. Mary of the Lake (USML)
also has a gymnasium
with facilities for basketball, swimming, handball, and racquetball.
The campus includes an auditorium with a full stage, theater organ, and
projection equipment, a dining hall,
and
a
power
plant.
Library: The Feehan
Memorial Library which includes the McEssy Theological Resource
Center has over 180,000
catalogued books. The collection is especially strong in Philosophy,
Patristic Studies, Theology, Sacramentology, Liturgy and Church History,
with a view to supporting research work in these fields. The Feehan Library
maintains subscriptions to 430
periodical publications. The library also participates in inter-library loan
programs with the Association of Chicago Theological Schools and general
libraries in the Chicago area, with the result that the student has access
2,100,000
books and more than 5500 periodicals from throughout the United
States and the world. The Liturgical
Institute Library/Reading Room is reserved for special collections, ritual
books, primary sources and scholarly journals which treat various aspects of
sacramental theology and liturgy.
Housing:
On-campus
housing, including a single room with private bathroom, is available for
single students. Telephone service and wireless and cable high-speed internet access are
available in each room. A common area with television and full kitchen is
also available. The Institute provides assistance for married students and
others who desire off-campus housing.
Dining Hall:
A pleasant
dining atmosphere is provided in the refectory. An appetizing and varied
menu, including a full soup and salad bar, is prepared
daily
by the
seminary kitchen staff.
Computer Services:
Students’
rooms are equipped with phone, wireless internet, and cable connections. Students who do
not have their own computers may use one of the computer labs on campus.
Support is available from trained student volunteers as well as from the
Office of Computer Services. Many classrooms are equipped for use of
technology and internet to enhance teaching and learning. Students must have
virus protection software with current virus definitions and have their
computers scanned by Computer Services staff before they will be allowed to
access the university's internet.
Dispensary:
A dispensary is
operated daily by a registered nurse. Doctors are available in the nearby
communities of Mundelein and Libertyville for consultation in cases of
illness.
Athletic Facilities:
In addition to the
gymnasium and indoor swimming pool, there are playing fields and courts for
baseball, handball, and tennis. An eighteen-hole golf course on the grounds
was leased to a professional operator for public use. It is available
without charge for students and faculty.
