Liturgical Reform after Vatican II: “What we have done and what we have failed to do.” |

The University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary continues a multi-year reflection of the Second Vatican Council in preparation for the fiftieth anniversary. This year, we will study the first of the constitutions promulgated by the Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium: the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. We are pleased to welcome as Meyer Lecturer, a distinguished scholar and theological educator, Msgr Kevin Irwin. Keynote Lecturer: The Rev. Msgr. Kevin W. Irwin is a priest of the Archdiocese of New York and Dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America, where he is also Walter J. Schmidt Professor of Liturgical Studies and ordinary professor of liturgical and sacramental theology. He also held appointments at the Pontifical North American College, the Gregorian and Angelicum universities, Fordham University and Saint Anselm College before assuming his current position at CUA. A prolific author, his most recent books include: Models of the Eucharist (Paulist), Context and Text: Method in Liturgical Theology (Liturgical Press), and Liturgical Theology: A Primer (Liturgical Press). Msgr. Irwin holds a doctor of sacred theology degree from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm. He holds membership in the North American Academy of Liturgy, the Society of Catholic Liturgy and the Catholic Theological Society of America. Monsignor Irwin will deliver two lectures on Sacrosanctum Concilium. The focus of the lectures will be to evaluate the reception of the constitution in the post-conciliar Church. Respondents: The following will serve as a respondents to Msgr. Irwin and sit on a panel in the final session of the lecture series.
The Rev. Douglas Martis is a priest of the Diocese of Joliet and Director of the Liturgical Institute at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake where he is also associate professor in the The Rev. Ronald Kunkel is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and instructor in the Department of Worship and the Liturgical Institute at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. His current teaching is focusing on Eucharistic ecclesiology. He is the former Associate Pastor of Holy Name Cathedral and Saint Peter Parish in Skokie. He also has served as an adjunct faculty member of the Institute for Priestly Formation. Father Kunkel is a member of the Society of Catholic Liturgy. He holds a licentiate in sacramental theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm and is completing his doctorate in systematic theology from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake.
